Day 5 Quarter-Finals Preview

No. 4 seed Cilic meets Juan Monaco and No. 5 seed David Goffin faces Joao Sousa in Friday’s Rakuten Japan Open quarter-finals. Monaco is 2-1 lifetime against Cilic, including a hard-court victory at 2015 ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells. After struggling with wrist, shoulder, back and knee injuries, Monaco is attempting to reach his first hard-court semi-final since the inaugural Shenzhen Open more than two years ago. Goffin leads his rivalry with Sousa 3-0, highlighted by a straight-set win in the 2014 Metz final. The Belgian has not won a title since then.

On the bottom half of the draw, No. 2 seed Gael Monfils and No. 7 seed Ivo Karlovic will meet in a rematch of the ATP World Tour 500 final in Washington on July 24. Karlovic was not broken during the entire tournament until he served for the title against Monfils. The Frenchman managed the break, then saved a championship point, before capturing the biggest title of his career. The Monfils vs. Karlovic winner will play either No. 6 seed Nick Kyrgios or Gilles Muller in Saturday’s semi-finals. Neither Kyrgios nor Muller has been broken this week, though Kyrgios benefited from a second-round walkover on Thursday due to Radek Stepanek’s back injury.

In doubles, Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah will take on Marcel Granollers and Marcin Matkowski, while Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Gilles Simon will play Robert Lindstedt and Alexander Peya.
